16 year old Kusakabe Maron seems like a normal student, but she really is the reincarnation of Jeanne D''Arc who serves God. She can transform with the assistance of an angel, Fin Fish, in order to hunt demons who hides in pieces of art. Once she seals a demon with her Checkmate pin, the demon turns into a chess piece and the piece of art will be replaced by an angelic painting that makes her look like a kaitou (thief).

Meanwhile, her best friend, Miyako, who is the daughter of a police detective, is trying to hunt down Jeanne, believing that she is stealing valuable artwork. She doesn''t know Maron and Jeanne are the same person.

Maron eventually meets Chiaki, a good-looking guy who moved in the same apartment building she''s in, and learns that he was her rival, Kaitou Sinbad.
